Meet Amandla and Indigo! Lifelong friends from Oakland, California who are passionate about speaking out against injustice and providing a youth perspective on being Black in America. A Letter to America was born in May 2020, following the beating of 14 year old Elijah Tufono by a police officer in Rancho Cordova, just a few weeks before the horrific murder of George Floyd and the historic protests that subsequently rocked the world. Join Amandla and Indigo as they use their platform to amplify the voices of a generation determined to change the course of American history.

    In this episode, we talk about the legend Chadwick Boseman, and a few of his amazing and inspirational movies, especially for the Black community. We also talk about some of our other favorite shows, movies, and books, especially those starring Black casts and uplifting Black voices.

  10. Same Story Different Day (00:17:14)

    We talk about another case of anti-Black police brutality—the horrific injuries sustained by unarmed Jacob Blake after he was shot in the back 7 times by Kenosha, Wisconsin police while Blake’s children watched. Blake is now paralyzed from the waist down, he had most of his intestines removed, and suffered severe injuries to his liver & kidneys. We also discuss White privilege at work as the White male murderer of two Kenosha Black Lives Matter supporters walked away with his long gun & police did absolutely nothing.

  12. Crabs in a Barrel: Colorism and the Fetishization of Mixed Children (00:20:07)

    Colorism is a remnant of slavery and colonialism. It perpetuates a hierarchy of light-skinned people over dark-skinned people. The fetishization of mixed children is a feature of colorism. People who promote colorism are like crabs in a barrel fighting for a spot at the top.

    In America, popular culture is Black culture—and Black has always been trending. In this episode, we discuss some new harmful TikTok trends, and teen celebrity Danielle Bregoli.

  14. What Killed Us Quicker; Racism or Covid? (00:18:54)

    Black people are currently being disproportionately affected by two pandemics--racism and covid. And when the two are mixed together, things go downhill real fast.

  15. Equality or Revenge? (00:18:44)

    We discuss how police brutality and systematic racism have kept us down since the beginning of time. The injustices we face have no end in sight. Should we be hungry for equality, or revenge?
