On November 30th, 2021, just over two years ago, a 15-year-old boy entered his high school with a gun, and went on a shooting spree which killed 4 students and injured many others. He was apprehended at the scene and his trial was recently completed. He was tried as an adult and received life in prison without parole. But this case is far from over, as his parents were also arrested and charged with 4 counts of involuntary manslaughter for each of the students killed. They went on to have separate trials and those trials have now been completed. I watched both trials which were broadcast on YouTube, and so this episode will present the details of the trials from hours and hours of courtroom footage. This episode looks at a practice which was common in Italy from the 16th to 19th centuries. A practice which saw young boys subjected to a procedure which resulted in their vocal cords not changing with the onset of adolescence. And this was the procedure of castration. The result was that a lack of testosterone allowed these boys to keep their youthful singing voices. The term used to describe these boys was the castrati, quite an unfortunate choice of word. As the castrati progressed into manhood, their voices became very unique. So in churches all over Italy, including the Sistine chapel, these men made careers from singing. Their voices were preferred over male singers and their dominance was helped because the Vatican had banned women from church choirs in the 1500’s. And with the development of opera, these men also had lucrative careers as opera singers. For three centuries, these singers became superstars of their time, demanding high sums for their services, singing in choirs and operas in Italy, but their fame also spread all over Europe. Baby Jacob Jeremiah Landin lost his life while in the care of his mother’s boyfriend. His story is covered on the true crime podcast Tapes from the Darkside with host TZ Borden. I was so saddened by Jacob’s story, that I reached out to TZ and wanted to help spread the word about Jacob’s death. So today I present you the first episode in a series of 4 episodes, and after listening I would encourage you to listen to the remainder of the story on Tapes from the Darkside. Baby Jacob had a 6 year old brother at the time of his death, Eric Carter-Landin. I am sharing this story with you in the hope that you can help Eric to bring his brother's murderer to justice. Eric has created a petition on change.org which reads as follows - Hi. My name is Eric Carter-Landin and my baby brother was murdered 36 years ago. His murderer was my mom's boyfriend. The suspect confessed and failed the lie detector test that was administered at the time. The autopsy report and a subsequent investigation conducted by the cold case investigator at the State Police confirm that he was responsible for Jacob's death. When the case was brought before the DA at the time he cited a lack of evidence and statute of limitations as the reason he wouldn't prosecute. I find it hard to believe that murdering a baby would have a statute of limitations. I also would like to know how a suspect's confession, as well as corroborating reports from the forensic pathologist, qualifies as a lack of evidence. I am creating this petition to urge the current DA, Clint Wellborn, to reopen this case and to bring charges against the person responsible for this heinous crime and bring him to justice. New Mexico has failed to hold child abusers and child murderers accountable for decades and it needs to stop. A message needs to be sent that we will not tolerate the abuse of children in this state. Please help me in signing this petition to get the attention of the District Attorney.
