Katy Elman: Musical Transitions (01:00:54)
Episode 39:
Katy Elman is a friend of BSP and owner of Southern Percussion in the UK. Being a trained musician, attending music schools from an early age, Katy ultimately had a unique opportunity to take over a retail sheet music company. We talk about this transition from performing to operating Southern Percussion, how her company has grown significantly over the last 10+ years, and some of the connections between our two businesses. Katy also has a new educational project getting off the ground this Summer called the Southern Percussion Institute, which we learn more about during our conversation!

Ivan Trevino: Diversity in Music and Message (01:08:14)
Episode 38 with Ivan Trevino
If you’re unfamiliar with Ivan Trevino’s compositions and work with The Big Trouble, it’s definitely worth a Google. A diverse collection of musical genres, instrumentation, orchestration, and performance opportunities help make his projects accessible to both listen to and perform. All with an ongoing thread of social awareness, inclusion and equity.
Ivan hasn’t been on our Artist Endorser roster long, but he’s definitely one of those people that makes you immediately feel comfortable, as if you’ve known each other for years.

Michael Ptacin: Never Say No (within reason) (01:12:52)
Episode 37 with Michael Ptacin
Michael Ptacin is a recent BSP Concert Artist, but actually someone we’ve known since meeting at a convention years ago. He’s got his hands in all sorts of stuff like musical theatre, sequencing & programming, administration and most recently audio video production. This all seems to stem from his willingness and excitement to try new things, accepting challenges and a loose professional motto to “Never say no...within reason”.
We discuss Michael’s motto in connection with his various activities and how they developed as well as a push for diversity awareness and inclusion within his projects and the percussion community as a whole.

Maria Flurry: The Business of Percussion (00:48:35)
Episode 36 with Maria Flurry
Maria Flurry has been a long time friend and supporter of Black Swamp Percussion. She knew Eric in the early years of BSP, used to work PAS conventions with us, and has always been one of our biggest supporters.
Besides being connected to the performance world in Michigan, Arizona and everywhere in between over the years, Maria has spent time, energy and resources developing non profit arts organizations, outreach programs, and helping to launch the AZ Philharmonic just a few years ago. Basically, she’s got her hands in a lot of different musical events, organizations and performance opportunities…as well as a wealth of experience and knowledge I try to tap into during our conversation.
Most recently, Maria is partnering with Homero Ceron and Fred Morgan to present a percussion trio performance in June through the Arizona Philharmonic.

Episode 32 with Melanie Voytovich
Melanie is the founder of the New Works Project, an organization focused on equity and accessibility within the new music community. Their commission and digital programs serve those who are interested in contemporary music but are limited in their capacity to engage in the community, due to limited funds or access to large or specialty instruments. Most of our conversation centers on accessibility and diversity within the music world, which is a huge part of Melanie's work, and which Black Swamp is proud to help support through the New Works Project.

Josh Jones: Acting Musical (01:02:13)
Episode 30 with Josh Jones
It's been almost two years ago since our first conversation with Josh Jones, and A LOT has been going on in his life. Besides winning a new position with the Kansas City Symphony and getting married, Josh seems to be endlessly developing, producing and presenting new resources for percussionists. We try to focus on a recent masterclass he presented called Acting Musical, but like most episodes, we fall into a maze of rabbit holes.

Donnie Johns: The Percussionist as Entrepreneur (00:57:54)
Episode 29 with Donnie Johns
Besides keeping an active teaching and performing schedule in the DC area, Donnie Johns also coordinates both the DMV percussion and music academy. We initially reached out to Donnie to talk about a short, yet very concise, article he wrote for PAS last Fall titled "The Percussionist as Entrepreneur". This is a topic that has come up several times over the last year with other guests, so it was nice to hear Donnie’s perspective, insight and additional comments on the subject.

Anthony Di Sanza: Don't Look Down (01:11:30)
Episode 28 with Anthony Di Sanza
Tony has been a long time friend and supporter of Black Swamp Percussion, going back to the early years when Eric was making tambourines and timpani mallets out of his garage in Adrian, MI. If you want to hear more about that era, check out the two BSP Origin Story Episodes we released last year or so.
Tony just wrapped up a video recording project with his Union Duo partner Todd Hammes, called Tubes and More. The duo dropped two new videos a week on YouTube for the last 7 weeks. You’ll hear some excerpts of these recordings during the podcast, and you can view full performances on Tony's YouTube page here: https://www.youtube.com/user/adisanza
Tony has also been working with Tom Curry and Mark Hetzler, fellow University of Wisconsin-Madison colleagues, having released a CD last Fall titled "Don’t Look Down". This is a super interesting mix of Tuba, Trombone and percussion, which includes electronics, sequencing and processing A really unexpected and unique project. Shaun Tilburg: The Audition Maestro (01:17:18)
Episode 27 with Shaun Tilburg
Shaun Tilburg is an orchestral excerpt master, having the audition prep and process down to a science, even if flexible at times. Shaun and Tim talk about practice habits, routine and mental preparation that applies to orchestra auditions, but carries over to all levels and genres of music...or life for that matter. But the conversation doesn't stop there. Shaun also has a passion for art & design, which shows itself in his publications, website and other creative outlets.

Besides teaching and performing in the Knoxville area, Abby is the Managing Director of the Neif-Norf organization and collaborates regularly with fellow BSP Concert Artist, Matthew Lau, performing as the Fisher/Lau Project. Tim Adams: Music 8:46 Project (01:05:36)
Episode 25 with Tim Adams
Tim Adams should need little to no introduction...he’s a veteran orchestral percussionist and educator, being chair of the percussion department at the University of Georgia. Prior to this position, Tim was timpanist and/or percussionists with the Pittsburgh Symphony, Indianapolis Symphony, Florida Philharmonic, Canton Symphony and Cleveland Orchestra. Tim is also highly regarded as a mentor to countless musicians and percussionists he’s come in contact with over the years. This conversation centers on his influence on the percussion world and his latest project Music 8:46, taking shape in response to the killing of George Floyd this past Summer.
