We are two computer science professors in upstate NY who will talk about things that are both related to classes we teach and things that we experienced in our road to where we are now. Many topics will be things that we find interesting to people not only in the field of CS, but others, such as gaming, cooking, home improvement and others.

013 - Fly Me to the Moon (00:28:52)
Space, the final frontier. Sure, Star Trek, Star Wars, Buck Rogers, StarGate SG-1, Battlestar Galactica, and many more have piqued our imagination for decades, but what about now? The Sci-Fi scene is strong, with shows like For All Mankind, The Expanse (one of the most scientifically accurate shows ever produced), and Doctor Who (still going strong), but something has changed; for the first time in a quarter of a century, people are excited about space again. They want to go back to the moon and beyond. NASA is cool again, and SpaceX is even cooler.
012 - Big data, privacy, and you (00:26:15)
When the Internet went commercial over 25 years ago, very few people could have imagined what the world would look like today. 3.8 billion people (nearly half the world’s population) has a smartphone. Who is collecting the data that is being generated and what are they doing with it? Does privacy matter? Are the conveniences of the modern world worth it? We will explore what it means to be part of the information age in this week’s episode.
011 - Xbox, PS, Switch, and a little Twitch (00:31:24)
The consoles after the release of the PS2 and Xbox didn’t change a lot for the next 10 years. Nintendo would re-enter the market with a revolutionary console. A new breed of game was emerging, as was online play. As we switched to online play, people could now play with their friends across the country not just across the room. Was in-person social gaming about to meet its demise?
The Death of Sega (Episode 10) (00:29:06)
The death of Sega was long and slow at the hands of Sony. In this episode we explore the demise of Sega in the console market and look at the introduction of a new player, the Xbox. What drove the market at those times and could Sega have made a go of it? What decision led to the state we were in at the dawn of a new century?
A New Player Goes Toe to Toe With a Giant (Episode 9) (00:31:10)
The battle between Sega and Nintendo continues through much of the 90s, but in a weird twist of fate, Nintendo solved their Sega problem by helping to create a juggernaut in the console world, the Sony Playstation. By the turn of the century, the dust had cleared, and Sega was to be no more. Nintendo was battered and bruised and Sony was reigning supreme. Seeing an opening, Microsoft took a chance and created the now iconic Xbox. Nintendo wasn’t out, but it was going to let Microsoft and Sony go head to head while it played the long game. Sit back, grab a frosty beverage and join us in this look back at the consoles that ended one millennium and started the next.
4th Gen Consoles (Episode 8) (00:30:27)
After the release of the NES, there came the game boy for the dawn of hand-hand general purpose consoles. From there, consoles evolved into the 16bit machines and we got what would be the first of the console wars in the late 80s and early 90s as Sega took on Nintendo. As we revisit these consoles we once again reminisce about the games we played and the memories we made. Playing games on your TV goes back many years, and today we are going to take a look at some of those early consoles, from the Atari 2600 through to the Nintendo Entertainment system. The Internet Years (Episode 6) (00:30:27)
1995 saw the dawn of the internet as we know it. There were FTP sites and web pages before that, but it was 1995 that saw the commercialization of the Internet and the beginning of the Internet age. We take a look back at those Wild West Days of computing and the first cable modems and the creation of Google and Winamp. It was an era before smart phones and the dawn of truly portable cell phones. While the previous decade had been a time for rapid changes in computers, this was the era of rapid change in communications. The end of the 80s into the mid-90s was a rapid time for transition for computers, from the creation to dialup services (at 120 characters per second, not 12), to the creation of the CD-ROM, VGA graphics and programming in DOS, we take a look at many of the aspects that got us interested in the computer whether it be programming it, playing games on it, or being social on it.
